Helena Food Share Programs

Monthly Grocery Program

Helena Food Share provides a nine meal, once a month supply of food to families and individuals. Households may access the monthly program once every calendar month. We are a need-based agency, which means there are no age or income requirements to receive food assistance. To receive monthly groceries, a household member must bring in a picture ID and, for the first visit only, a document with a social security number on it for all household members. A picture ID must be shown each time a monthly groceries are requested.

Monthly groceries consist of meat, dairy, meal-in-a-can/box (chili, macaroni & cheese and etc.), pasta, frozen treats, soup and etc.

Daily Grocery Program

Helena Food Share provides daily access to perishable food to those in need. There are no eligibility requirements. Bakery, produce, misc. refrigerated foods, animal food, and sundries are available based on daily limits established after receipt of the day’s donations.

Senior Commodities

Helena Food Share assists Rocky Mountain Development Council in distributing federal commodities to qualifying seniors every other month. As the Helena distribution site, HFS serves more than 300 very low income seniors through this program.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Boxes

Holiday food box distribution is a special project of Helena Food Share. Helena Food Share works with St. Mary’s Catholic Church and an ecumenical coalition of churches to provide families with a traditional Thanksgiving meal box. As part of the Community Christmas Sharing coalition, Helena Food Share provides food for a traditional Christmas dinner to needy families.

Kids Feed N Fun

The much-loved Kids Feed N Fun (KFNF) Program will once again offer lunches after school closes – but Helena Food Share will not be directly involved.  Helena School District Food Services will manage the 2010 lunch program, ensuring cost savings to the whole community and a nutritious lunch to all local youth ages 18 and under.  Open lunch sites are Bryant School and Memorial Park from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday starting June 14th.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

Helena Food Share offers the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program every summer to qualifying seniors. As one of six Montana towns taking part in the federal grant, the agency receives coupons for qualifying seniors to use at our local Market to purchase Montana grown fruit, vegetables and cut herbs. No funding is available for administrative expenses.

Agency Distribution

Helena Food Share distributes surplus food to other non-profit agencies with feeding programs. Thousands of pounds of food are distributed to other agencies like God’s Love, Salvation Army and various group homes and shelters.

Volunteer Program

Helena Food Share serves the community as a site for volunteerism. Supported work programs, work experience, community service and academic internships are examples of volunteerism at Helena Food Share.

Food Stamp Outreach

This program receives 50% of its funding from USDA FNS. Our goal is to increase the number of clients receiving Food Stamps with assistance from our volunteers.  Ask at the Helena Food Share warehouse on how to receive assistance with Food Stamps.
