Volunteer

Did you Know?

In 2024, 1,211 volunteers provided 25,816 hours working in the Community Food Resource Center at Helena Food Share. From rescuing food from area grocery stores first thing in the morning, sorting and stocking food in the Market, prepping food in the kitchen, greeting customers as they arrive, helping box items when they leave, watering or harvesting produce in our garden, or helping with any special group projects, volunteers make everything happen. There are jobs for many interests and abilities. We love our volunteers and appreciate how they give of their time, energy and smiles to ensure our neighbors have food when they are in need. And, our volunteers are a lot of fun too!

Current Opportunities:

Garden Volunteers:

If you enjoy gardening, the Helena Food Share garden has several opportunities for you to help us grow nutritious fruits and veggies for distribution in the market. Whether it’s soil prep, planting, watering, weeding, or harvesting – your efforts will help provide over 1,000 lbs of produce each growing season.

Grocery Rescue Volunteers:

Each day, Helena Food Share rescues over 2000 pounds of food from grocery stores around town. Volunteers ride with a staff member from 7:45 am to around noon. Some days may go longer if we receive an abundance of rescue. Rescue volunteers should be comfortable in all weather, be able to lift 30-50 lbs, and climb in and out of a box truck. This is a physically demanding position. Let us be your gym once a week!

Market Support, Sorting & Stocking:

Positions are available for market support in the afternoons or food sorting & stocking in the mornings or afternoons. This is the Friday morning crew. They have a great time with each other and take pride in making the Market look its best for shoppers.

Market Greeter or Intake Volunteers:

Join Tracey and others in welcoming customers. It’s fun to support your neighbors and be part of a great community organization. If you have time in the afternoons, enjoy people, work well with a variety of folks, and can write on forms clearly, we have a position for you.

Age Requirements:

Adults and kids 16 or over can volunteer for any position or activity. Children between the ages of 12 and 15 may volunteer with an adult supervisor after shopping hours for food repackaging activities.

Some special projects and food drives are options for children younger than 12. Please get in touch with us for available options.
